Multilingualism
Wherever you come from and no matter your child’s level and ability, the International School of London will ensure that you receive a world class linguistic provision tailored to your family’s needs and future aspirations.
The International School of London (ISL) was founded in 1972 with a pioneering mission: to offer every child - regardless of background or fluency - the opportunity to maintain and develop their home language within a rigorous and inclusive academic framework. Remarkably, this commitment began 27 years before the launch of UNESCO’s Mother Language Day in 1999.
Now, ISL provides one of the world’s most comprehensive multilingual education programmes, unmatched in both quality and scale. Since our founding, we have expanded our provision year after year and now offer instruction in 24 home languages (also sometimes referred to as our “Mother Tongue” programme) and 5 acquisition languages (sometimes referred to as “MFL” or “World Languages” or “Language Arts”).
If your family’s home language is not currently offered, we will do everything possible to find a qualified teacher to support your child. All of our home language educators are experienced, fully qualified teachers of language and literature.
In 2020, multilingualism became a formal part of our curriculum, not just as a subject, but as a guiding principle. It enables students to learn, connect, and collaborate across languages, often with native speakers among their peers and teachers. Our uniquely diverse school community fosters daily intercultural dialogue, and we proudly celebrate this through regular academic and cultural events that highlight our commitment to linguistic excellence.
Thank you for your interest in languages and in our school. We invite you to explore the rest of our website to discover more about our unique multilingual programmes and community.
