A world of languages, under one roof

Across the Globe

For three days, our school felt even more like the whole world.

World of Languages Week brought together students from PYP, MYP and Sixth Form to celebrate the languages they speak, the cultures they belong to and the identities they are shaping.

A group of people, dressed in casual attire, are gathered on a stage with a red and black curtain backdrop, suggesting a performance or event.

Throughout the week, form times became spaces for small moments of discovery — quizzes, short films and cultural challenges that sparked conversation.

On Wednesday, the hall transformed into a living exhibition. Students moved between stalls exploring Japanese name writing, Danish Fastelavn crafts, Swahili riddles, Dutch games, French and Spanish cafés, Portuguese displays, Hebrew poster-making, Greek letters and English-language art and reading presentations.

There was laughter, concentration and a steady hum of different languages being shared. Students weren’t just learning about cultures. They were learning from one another.

Thursday’s UNESCO Mother Language Showcase assemblies brought that sharing to the stage. Through dance, poetry, music, drama and fashion, students performed in the languages that shape their lives beyond school. For some, it was a moment of pride. For others, a moment of courage. For everyone watching, it was a reminder that every language carries a story.

On Friday, we marked the approach of Lunar New Year together. A Lion Dance filled the playground with colour and movement, symbolising energy and new beginnings. Fortune cookies were shared in form time and conversations continued over lunch.

World of Languages Week is joyful and visible. But it reflects something that happens here every day: many languages, many perspectives, one community.

Under one roof, the world speaks — and is heard.
