Across the Globe

On a busy Thursday afternoon, ISL Performing Arts students continued to take advantage of opportunities to extend their musical skills in tune with our commitment to integrating expertise and extending learning beyond the classroom.

In the second dedicated Tech Hub workshop, Grade 10 students worked with Alex, a professional sound engineer, to record soundscapes for their Sense of Calm project - following on from their Design Museum visit at the beginning of the month (see ISL Life 9).  They also re-engineered compositions they had previously worked on and notated.  Thank you to Miss Naia for facilitating this.

Thank you also to Nolan (Grade 12) for coming down the previous week to share with the students valuable insights into how music can affect mood.  This was knowledge he had gained through his personal project work when Nolan too was a Grade 10 student.

Later that evening, Grade 9 Performing Arts had the opportunity to attend the world premiere of Luke Bedford's Percussion Concerto at the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank, with leading percussionist Colin Currie playing the solo.  The composer himself was present and spoke before the concert.  Some of the motifs he used are reminiscent of those the students have employed in their current composition project - Tube Ride: a fascinating evening at a leading international venue.  Thank you to Ms Salmela for accompanying the trip.
