ISL's student-led Peace Curriculum: Empowering young voices for global understanding
At International School of London (ISL), we believe education goes beyond academics - it shapes compassionate, critical thinkers who can make a positive impact on the world. In response to the growing conversations among our students about global conflicts, social issues, and the influence of media, ISL has introduced a ground-breaking student-led Peace Curriculum as part of our International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Why a Peace Curriculum?
In today’s interconnected world, students are constantly exposed to stories of war, political unrest, and societal challenges through social media and news feeds. These realities can feel overwhelming, but they also present an opportunity: to help young people develop the skills and values needed to navigate complexity with empathy and understanding.

Our Peace Curriculum is designed by ISL’s MYP students, who form the core committee leading this initiative, and guided by these core questions:
- Why is peace so difficult to achieve?
- How has peace been achieved locally and globally before?
- Who are role models for peace?
- How do we navigate the media?
- What is the role of young people in grassroots movements?
This curriculum encourages inquiry, reflection and dialogue - hallmarks of the IB learner profile, fostering attributes such as open-mindedness, principled action and caring.

Creating Space for Diverse Perspectives
A fundamental principle of the Peace Curriculum is creating an environment where different perspectives are respected and heard. Students learn that while agreement is not always possible, listening and understanding are essential for meaningful dialogue. This aligns with our mission to develop internationally minded individuals who recognise their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.
Topics That Matter
In Term 1, the student committee created sessions addressing issues relevant to their own school community before expanding to global themes. Topics include Free Speech, Toxic Friendships (Grade 6), Beauty Ideals, Homophobia, Racism & Xenophobia, and Misogyny & Sexism.
These sessions take place during weekly workshops, led by student facilitators with support from ISL staff. By starting locally and moving toward global perspectives, students practice critical thinking and empathy - skills essential for peacebuilding.

Empowering Future Leaders
The Peace Curriculum reflects ISL’s commitment to nurturing students who are knowledgeable, reflective, and caring. Through this initiative, our learners are not only exploring what peace means but actively shaping a culture of respect and understanding within our community and beyond.
