In the wake of the pandemic and with a vaccine on the horizon, the global conversation has turned towards the anti-vaxx community and the issue of free speech vs misinformation. With this in mind, the DP college had the pleasure of hosting a lunchtime debate moderated by David with the motion "Anti-vaxx people should be allowed to express themselves in public".
Matthew and Alessandro who argued for the motion, made excellent arguments about the freedom of speech and the role of the government in public safety, while Will and Reo, who argued against the motion, made a great case for the dangers and effects of misinformation and disinformation on public health.
Grade 4 and Grade 5 tuned in via TEAMS to observe how our older students structure and conduct debate; PYP students posed some excellent questions that sparked discussion among both the panelists and audience. Our panelists and moderator deftly handled the questions brought forward by staff and students. Ms Simona was particularly impressed with their debate skills: “[The students] were great models of how to support your opinion in a calm, organized and effective way.”
