Music at ISL

Music at the International School of London is a journey of creativity, cultural exploration and expressive independence.
In the Primary Years Programme, Music is introduced by our specialist teachers, and students learn to appreciate music, compose and sing. Compositions are partially devised by the children so that creativity is nurtured, and students find a meaningful way to participate that showcases their talents. We tap into their diverse and rich cultural perspectives, and performances often feature several languages. The children also have the opportunity to perform in concerts throughout the year.
Throughout the Middle Years Programme, students learn how sound communicates ideas, identity and emotion, while developing the skills to create, perform and reflect as young musicians. Students begin by exploring musical traditions from around the world, discovering how the elements of music shape cultural expression. They then experiment with sound in imaginative ways — using found objects, technology and environmental recordings to rethink what music can be. As they progress, they study rap as contemporary storytelling, explore the craft of minimalist composition and investigate how music across cultures can calm, heal or invite reflection.
By Grades 9 and 10, students carve out their own artistic pathways. Whether building an album, composing for film or pursuing other specialised projects, they learn to research, experiment and express clear artistic intentions. This independence prepares them for the inquiry‑driven approach of DP Music, where they continue to grow as thoughtful creators and communicators.
Music at ISL empowers students to listen deeply, create boldly and connect meaningfully through sound.
Individual music lessons

One-to-one music lessons at ISL also provide a unique opportunity for students to explore their creativity, develop their skills and foster a lifelong appreciation for music and learning. Our team of experienced music teachers has studied at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, the Guildhall School of Music, the Institute of Contemporary Music and the Yehudi Menuhin School.
Each term, our expert team of teachers prepares students who are ready to perform for a concert. Developing music performance skills requires a combination of practice, feedback and intentional effort. Individual music lessons, held weekly in school during term time, are a valuable and enriching experience for students of all ages and skill levels.
The Instrumental Music Programme at ISL offers students a range of individual music tuition, including lessons on piano, guitar, drums, cello, flute, saxophone and violin.
